Anyone who did not see the Independent’s wonderful front page this morning (entirely taken over by Dave Brown’s cartoon below) should definitely check in to his blog post today.
As he says, ‘we are privileged to live in a country where cartoonists don’t get locked up, or worse murdered, for what they draw.’ (Well, we think do but after yesterday’s killings, can we be sure?) ‘But of course it shouldn’t be a privilege, it should be a fundamental right. There are still plenty of countries, and not just Islamic ones, where cartoonists are getting imprisoned for caricaturing their leaders. So it’s a fundamental right that we need to keep reasserting.’
It is good that the cartoonists of the world have, to a man, agreed with Dave Brown’s response to the murders – and that so many of their readers (not including me I fear as I did not hear about it until the late news last night) were out on the streets supporting them.
