Cooking gluten, wheat and dairy free – the review

14/06/2011 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  Leave a Comment

You may remember that I offered a free copy of my new freefrom cookbook to any blog reader who would give it and objective review – and Janet Woodward at Wellfoods put up her hand. So off a copy went to her – and here is her review – for which, Janet, many thanks.

A cook book with a glossy photo of a pie crust on the front cover?? Wouldn’t be seen as sufficiently tempting or glamorous for ordinary mortals. Oh how wrong!!

We are not talking ordinary people here….the gluten wheat and dairy free amongst us….. are in for a treat. From the first glance of the front cover….the golden pie crust…makes you want to open the book.

It has an easy straight talking text, so typical of Michelle herself…and a glorious style in buckets. It opens with a simple return to basics…with explanations and suggestions for realistic alternative grains and dairy substitutes available on the High Street throughout the UK. Extensive list of contacts, suppliers, further information in the Resources directory.

There are seriously tempting uncomplicated recipes for even the most fussy family members in addition to the recipes being suitable for the gluten/wheat/dairy frees. Just not necessary to cook two of anything….. Easy to make recipes for both the novices and experts.

There is genuine encouragement for (so far) unconfident cooks. Gluten, wheat and dairy free living can indeed be daunting…this proves it’s not only possible…but with the proof you can eat very well…..

Particularly like the use of recipes from international sources…the art of the cook is to use the cuisine of other geographic regions….

Would I buy the book? Yes…no hesitation…and more important…would I use it….Yes.

Anything I didn’t like?

Annoying habit of ill-placed hyphens where the wrap around for the layout of words not applied correctly. i.e. animal milks….an (appearing on one line) and –imal (showing on the next). This is what may happen when the book is type set where English isn’t the first language.

Thanks Michelle for the opportunity to review this book.

I know that publication was somewhat delayed but ….no matter…it’s the results that really do count….

If you are inspired to buy the book it is available from Amazon at £11.24 inc P&P.

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
