FreeFrom chippie in Whitby

16/01/2014 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  5 Comments

Quayside chippieI had literally just pressed the ‘publish’ button on the last post when Alex forwarded me a press release about the Quayside fish and chip shop in Whitby.

While a number of fish and chip shops now offer a ‘gluten-free Friday’ (or Monday, or Tuesday) the Quayside has gone the whole hog with gluten-free fish and chips every day accompanied by freefrom bread and vinegar and Against the Grain gluten free beer! Now that is what we like to hear!

Their gluten-free batter is made from corn, rice and soya flour, and both fish and chips are cooked in dedicated gluten-free pans and oil using dedicated utensils.

And not only does the Quayside cater for coeliacs but they offer lactose-free, nut-free, low-potassium, low-sodium and no-sugar options for those that need them. And you don’t need to book….. How far is Whitby?…. Rats – too far to get there for supper!

But for those of you who live a bit nearer to north Yorkshire, the Quayside is to be found at 7 Pier Road in Whitby. The Fusco family who run it (Stuart Fusco was Young Fish Frier of the Year in 2004) have two other fish and chip shops in Whitby but as far I can see, the Quayside is the only one to have gone freefrom.

I definitely think they should be entering the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards!!

What a great building! From the picture it looks like the UK’s most up-market chippie! Definitely worth the trip.

Wow, must put on the list to visit. Have been wondering why chippies who offer 1 or 2 days a month can’t offer it all the time. Most people needing GF would be happy to wait while fish and chips were cooked to order.

If you do manage to get, Susan, do please report on your meal!! Enjoy…

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

FreeFrom Christmas Awards – the Winners

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
