I have just sent out another two mini batches of kefir to keen readers one of whom was singing the praises of raw goat’s milk from Ellie’s dairy. So I thought maybe I should do a brief roundup of the raw milk suppliers I knew about. So here goes:
Ellie’s Dairy – ‘the finest goat milk for Kent’!
The image, by the way, is of Ellie:
‘Ellie was one of our first three goats and was the last daughter born to a Breed Champion in an important line of British Toggenburgs.
She was one of our best milkers and a great character,
so we thought it right that the dairy should be named after her. We sadly lost her in April 2010 but her name is carried on by one of her grand-daughters, born to Ellie’s only daughter Bunnie, just a few days before Ellie died.’
Hurdlebrook in Somerset.
The most delicious Guernsey milk which we use to feed our rapidly growing kefir grains. It produces the most fabulous rich by tangy kefir. We get our milk courtesy of the Farm Direct delivery service.
For other suppliers, your best bet is to go to the Natural Food finder map as they give details of raw milk suppliers (there are lots of them) all round the country. They also give links to companies that will deliver raw milk if you cannot get to a farm or a farmers’ market, it including Hook and Son (the farm that tried to sell their milk from a vending machine in Selfridges and got closed down by the FSA.)
Anyhow, as far as our kefir is concerned (I say our’s but really it is Sue Cane’s which we baby sat for six weeks last year while she was filming, the bulk of which she then very kindly let us keep)… I now have a waiting list of people who want some grains to get going brewing their own, so if you want to be added to it, just let me know. But I warn you, I can only supply as fast as the kefir grains multiply so you could be waiting for some weeks!
Meanwhile, you could watch Sue’s video of how to make kefir or you could read Gill Jacob’s article on the same subject.
