Maybe that red wine was not such a good idea… Allergy prevention tips

01/07/2011 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  Leave a Comment

I knew it was too good to be true…. There is a down side to all those great benefits I was going on about a few weeks ago…. (See ‘The health giving properties of red wine…‘)

In a useful post in Today Health, Danish researchers are reported to have found that the risk of perennial allergic rhinitis is raised by 3% for every additional alcoholic beverage consumed each week. How come?  Because bacteria and yeast in the alcohol produce histamines which can ramp up your allergy symptoms….

Other depressing findings are that more than 75% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to at least one common houseplant, ficus, yukka, ivy, palm, orchids and ferns being the worst offenders.

More cheerfully, they report that a South Korean study found that laundering cotton sheets at 140 degrees (F) killed 100% of dust mites while washing at 104 degrees (F) only killed off 6.5%.

They also suggest that if you are pollen allergic you strip as soon as you get home, throw your clothes in the washing machine (to avoid dragging pollen all over the house) and shower to remove any pollen clinging to your person.

And, if you are going to swim in chlorinated swimming pools, wear goggles to protect your eyes from the irritating effect of the chlorine.  A recent study in Pediatrics found that teens who spend more than 100 hours in a chlorinated pool have a 3 – 7 times higher risk of developing hay fever than those who swim  in chlorine-free pools. Personally I think chlorinated pools are the invention of the devil so I am not at all surprised – but I know I am in the minority here….

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
