‘Neighbour’s leather sex impacts on 10 year old’s allergies…’

21/05/2011 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  2 Comments

Hardly surprising that John Scott could not resist this link when trawling the internet for interesting allergy posts for us – and nor could I!

Not that looking really helped either of us as the story in the San Francisco Chronicle never actually explained what ‘leather sex’ is – please feel free to speculate… But whatever it is, it is noisy – which is the point of the story.

It seems that the 10-year old’s recently-divorced dad, Jack Hagerty, bought this condo so that he could have his son to stay for the weekend. Because the boy had a number of indoor allergies, he took up the carpet and  the underlay so as to reduce the number of dustmites and other allergens in the apartment. But removing the carpet also removed the sound-proofing which had previously protected the condo from noise from below so what had previously been vague and muffled sounds of ‘leather sex’ became rampant and indeed even alarming!

When emailed by Hagerty about the noise, the neighbour below replied: “I am a sexual enthusiast and enjoy leather sex, so it is possible that without the carpet barrier you may hear the sounds of leather sex. While this is not my issue, you may find you need to explain things to your son as it could be confusing to him since it frequently doesn’t sound as pleasurable as it is…..”

Hagerty is devastated but surely a little of that lateral thinking which is so vital for those with allergies attempting to lead a vaguely normal life, could have solved the problem. Put back the underlay and the carpet, then cover it with lino or vinyl and tape the edges firmly to the wall so that no dust from the carpet can get through. Not only will it be allergy friendly but even better insulated from whatever may be going on downstairs!

Well I never! I am lucky to have such ‘quiet’ neighbours I think. Ear plugs could be a good investment! And I heard recently at the Allergy and GF show that carpets, if they are the right ones, and hoovered regularly with an allergen hoover can be better than wooden floors. Not sure if this is really the case. I am also a bit intrigued by ‘leather sex’! Images in my head now that I hadn’t expected whilst surfing your blog on a Sunday night Michelle! HAHA

    O. M. G! The mind boggles even though I am trying not to let it. Each to his own, I suppose.

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
