Polish beekeepers get Monsanto’s GM maize banned

25/02/2013 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  3 Comments

Bees in hiveThose of you who believe that the catastrophic collapse of so many  honey bee populations is at least partly caused by GM crops and the chemicals applied to them will be greatly cheered by the success of Polish bee activists in getting GM maize banned in Poland.

Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki told a press conference that they believed that the maize (MON810) was responsible for ‘further devastating an already dwindling bee population’ and that they were therefore banning it entirely – making Poland the first nation to formally acknowledge the link between the Monsanto’s GM maize and  colony collapse disorder.

Although they have not banned MON810, Belgium, the UK, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Ireland and Slovakia successfully blocked the Danish move to allow the expansion of GM cultivation in Europe last year and France actually banned MON810. Sadly, the US continues to ‘forge ahead in the unmitigated, and largely unregulated, cultivation and use of GM crops’.

How does MON810 affect the bees? It appears that it affects their ability ‘learn’ or ‘remember’ where food/pollen may be, so that they cannot feed or make honey properly. For much more detail on this see this 2008 research report of a study done in Mexico or, rather more comprehensible to the lay reader, John McDonald’s article in The Canadian.

Monsanto is one of the wealthiest agribusiness’s in the world and links between Monsanto and its regulator, the US Foods and Drug Administration (FDA) are well known. Until an impermeable wall is constructed between the FDA and the businesses it is supposed to regulate no progress will be made.

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
