Six hours of solid chocolate….

17/02/2018 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  2 Comments

A very short post, designed only to make you all feel very jealous…

Yes, I have once again been judging for the Academy of Chocolate Awards.

I was invited for the first time last year and was so dubious as to whether I would have any serious expertise to offer that I only did one category. However, inspired by the Academy’s excellent tasting notes, this year I put my hand up for filled chocolates in the morning, and chocolate bars in the afternoon. Maybe a little ambitious – it did rather feel that way as we tackled the 35th bar sample at 5pm….

But some amazing chocolates. All the entries that we judged will get judged again by a different panel before going on to a final judging session so I am giving nothing away by highlighting a few of the more bizarre – and the more delicious.

In the bizarre corner were definitely the kale and mustard bar (the green one on the plate above), a black garlic filled chocolate and a curry bar (surprisingly successful!). Also in the bizarre corner were the Mandarin and green tea ‘truffles’…

…these amazing ‘space balls’…

… and these sablés each of which had a sort of mini Bakewell tart inside!

In the super delicious corner, try these cardamom and ginger bars…

…and the rum soaked cherry truffles – which were also one of the prettiest with tiny red cherries with green stalks on the top of the each truffle.

However, you will need to possess your souls in patience. As I said, there is much judging yet to be done before the winners are announced later in  the year. To stay in the loop check in every now and to the Academy of Chocolate Awards site for the latest update.

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
