The Pfizer booster jab is safe for those with anaphylaxis

20/12/2021 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  4 Comments

The BSACI, the Anaphylaxis Campaign and Allergy UK have all confirmed that the Pfizer and the Moderna booster vaccines is safe even if:

  • you have any type of FOOD allergy (including anaphylaxis)
  • you have had anaphylaxis to WASP or BEE stings
  • you have an identified allergy to most medicines
  • any current or recent medications that you have taken safely contain Polyethylene glycol (PEG/Macrogol)

The only people who need to seek further advice before they get the booster are those who have had an immediate anaphylaxis to MULTIPLE unrelated medicines that contain Polyethylene glycol (PEG/Macrogol).

(Polyethylene glycol is a common ingredient in medicines. Most allergic reactions caused by PEG have resulted from laxatives and some types of steroid injections. It is an extremely rare cause of anaphylactic reactions and ONLY individuals with a history of anaphylaxis immediately after taking medicines containing PEG.)

You can check ingredients of medicines at www.medicines.org.uk if you are not sure.

However the initial concerns about the Polyethylene glycol in the Pfizer vaccination, which turned out to be completely unfounded, spread widely and it has proved almost impossible to correct this message. As a result people are still being turned away from vaccination centres because they report a history of anaphylaxis to food, venom, or to an identified medicine. It seems that they are often wrongly informed that, although the Astra Zeneca is rarely used as a booster,  they need AstraZeneca instead of the Pfizer.

For further confirmation check , or refer doubters, to the Government’s Green Book vaccination guide – go to page 30 for details under ‘Contraindications’.

The message is – the Pfizer and Moderna boosters are safe even if you have anaphylaxis.

I can concur, I had to get my GP To check through ingredients with me but I have now had the Pfizer booster, after previously having two Astrazeneca jabs. I was fine. I did not have any adverse reactions.

Good to know Ruth – and you are the ideal person to endorse it so thanks for doing so.

lucky Ruth Whatever they say PEG could be a problem for me, what is it made from and certainly NO sugar for me, it seems to appear in everything. I have previously had a skin test for flu vacciine and look as though I have been stung by a wasp after 10.00 minutes *I have asked for a skin test for the Covid vaccone but to no avail, just ignored.. I have never since had the flu vaccine so a recent locum GP said no to the Covid. I am holding out hope for the new antiviral, but although promised as yet no sign of it. xx Jacquie

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
