How to create a low allergen garden

27/10/2017 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  Leave a Comment

Readers of this blog and our websites will know all about Tom Ogren, the originator of the concept of low allergen gardening, the inventor of the OPALS allergy scale and the author of The Allergy Fighting Garden,  Safe Sex in the Garden and a number of other books linking the massive rise in respiratory allergy with the increase in the number of male trees in our urban environments. (See his site for more.)

(To encapsulate 35 years work on one brief paragraph…. In nature there is roughly an even balance of male and female trees. Male trees push out clouds of pollen into the atmosphere; female street suck it in out of the atmosphere. But while male trees only push pollen into the atmosphere, female trees, in urban environments, create seeds and fruits which drop on pavements, creating both mess and a hazard for pedestrians. So town planners over the last 50+ years have tended to plants only males trees. The result is that, in urban environments, we now have significantly more male trees than females – and they are pushing out far more pollen than the available female trees can suck up. Hence much more pollen in the atmosphere to be breathed in – and reacted to – by humans. Combine this with other forms of air borne pollution – of which more in another blog – and you create a perfect storm for those who are prone to react to airborne allergens.)

Anyhow….. Tom was here in London last week and while he was here, I persuaded him to take a trip around my garden  – because what you have in your own garden really can make a difference to how you react, even if you live in a heavily ‘male-tree’d’ town. So here he is, pointing out my good, my bad and my ugly allergenic plants…..

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
