Sue Cane has been busy. Apart from making kefir videos for us she has been clearing out her father’s kitchen and unearthing some very splendid artifacts – all of which have to date from the 1960s or earlier as the prices, as you will notice, are still in shillings and pence.
But whatever about the prices, how tastes have also changed. When did anyone last meet, let alone make, a cream horn? And just have a read of the wonderful recipes for ‘foreign salads’ (Elizabeth David would be turning in her grave) and ‘sumptuous school sandwiches’!
If you find such blasts from the past as fascinating as Sue and I do then you should take yourself some day to the Museum of Brands and Packaging in Notting Hill Gate – over 12,000 packs of everything from WWI Oxo cubes or 1930s KitKats to 1890s Rimmel cosmetics – lovingly collected by consumer packaging enthusiast Robert Opie.
