A recent investigation by the Alliance to Save our Antibiotics has found antibiotic resistant E coli in UK origin pig and chicken meat sold in major UK food retailers – and they are not happy about it!
So they are writing to all of the major supermarkets asking them to work with farmer and suppliers to ban the prophylactic use of antibiotics in healthy farm animals – with especial emphasis on those antibiotics which are very widely used in humans (such as Trimethoprim, used to treat over half of lower urinary tract infections in humans) or where no other antibiotic is known to work on a specific condition.
The Alliance is made up of over 50 health, medical and food charities or pressure groups including the Campaign for Better Hopsital Food, Global Sepsis Alliance, Green Peace, MRSA Action UK, the Real Bread Campaign, the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Pathologists and the Soil Association.
If you would like to add your name to their campaign check in here and just follow the instructions.
