It works!

20/10/2015 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  3 Comments

Chef'n LooseleafThe ‘Looseleaf’ – it actually works!  All of you who are probably far more gadget minded that I am may already have seen it – or at least will know that Chef’n gadgets usually do work – but I am always deeply dubious about gadgets. So when some keen PR girl rang me up and wanted me to write about it I said, OK, send me one and if it works, I will!

That was a few weeks ago and no one was more surprised than me when one day the thing actually turned up. So, last night, I tried it – and, it works! Well, it works a treat on kale, which is probably everybody’s greatest bugbear, and on all varieties of kale. My fave is cavolo nero which I have previous attacked with my best long Sabatier steel blade but I have to admit that this is a lot easier.

I have not yet tried it on spinach (I mean ‘real’ spinach with spines, not that pathetic baby leaf stuff….) but I have had a go with thyme, rosemary and parsley. Thyme and parsley absolutely fine, rosemary not quite so good as the smaller big hole is too big and the largest small hole too small…. However, I then turned it round and pushed it through the big hole backwards (if you see what I mean) and that worked reasonably well.

Anyhow, I don’t know what it cost as the keen PR girl failed to send me any details and the Chef’n site is less than helpful although you can apparently buy it on line – and at Amazon here in the US and here in the UK. (Actually, I lie as I do know what it costs having just located  it on Amazon – £6.99.) Moreover, I can’t tell the keen PR girl that her efforts paid off and that I have written about it, as I don’t know who she is. Oh well – I did my bit! Hope you enjoy using it if you buy one…

Fantastic! That’s my mother’s Christmas present sorted! (We have a sub-£10 rule, in case anyone considers this tight.) (I am tight, but this isn’t evidence of it …. )

I have one of these! Sought one out earlier in the year when I read about them on a US cooking blog. I absolutely love it too. Chef’n stuff is terrific.

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
