Gluten-free coffee shops

24/05/2013 //  by Michelle Berridale Johnson//  8 Comments

geniusCaffe NeroVery good news for gluten-intolerant/coeliac Caffe Nero fans – Genius is now supplying filled gluten-free rolls (chicken, salad and pesto to be precise) to almost 600 stores around the UK – just hope that the one near you is one of those 600 and that you like chicken!!

StarbucksHowever, fear not – if you do not have the right Caffe Nero near you, maybe you do have a Starbucks who, last month, launched a new Gammon, Mature West Country Cheddar & Coleslaw Gluten Free Roll made with Genius bread.

CostaMeanwhile Costas offer gluten-free brownies, fruit cake and Bakewell tarts – but not yet any savouries.

Bravo to all of them – and we look forward to the day when finding gluten-free rolls, panini, sandwiches or cakes in a coffee shop will no longer justify a mention on the FM blog or anywhere else as it will be so common!! Meanwhile, just a thought….. Could all the above ensure that their offerings are not only gluten free, but dairy free too?… And maybe even egg and nut free?….

Bravo yes but whilst being gluten free they all contain dairy. Oh you know, sometimes I am really jealous of coeliacs. They don’t know how good they have. Oh to be JUST a coeliac. But it is a very big step in the right direction. Just read your final line and note you came to the same conclusion. Coeliacs – you are so lucky… imagine having to avoid wheat, dairy, nuts and soya. I remain smug as I sip my black coffee – it does remove any temptation to snack, eat cakes etc. and keeps my slim. Imagine what size I’d be if I could eat all this food!!!

Yes – very frustrating for those who are – or who are also – dairy and or egg/nut allergic!! However, slowly, slowly catchee monkey and the fact that so many people have now woken up to gluten as an ‘allergen’ means that they are already half way to ‘getting’ the whole allergy business – and realising that omitting gluten from their products is not actually quite as difficult as they thought it would be means that they will now, hopefully, be more open to omitting a few more things! Anyhow, we will keep pushing!!

And if ‘normal’ people realise that #GF and other freefrom doesn’t mean you have to compromise on taste, it can only get better. I have my sights on that monkey. In the meantime I will continue to smuggle in my own treats. Not been thrown out yet :o)

Absolutely! One should encourage as many ‘normal’ people as possible to try the ‘freefrom’ offer – although of course, given then it is limited anyhow, that will mean less for those who actually need it…. Ouch!

Oh yeah, I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe tell them it’s horrid and more for us? I am having this problem at all, husband who used to turn his nose up at my freefrom fare is now regularly stealing my sacred stash. Stoppit, Mine. Not sharing. 😛

There’s a lovely little cafe in Twyford, Hampshire called Celiacs Fayre. The lady who runs it is coeliac so all the food is gluten free, BUT she is also flexible and was able to cater dairy and soya free too (especially with advance notice). Her food was great and her prices very reasonable. Really worth a visit if you go down that way at all.

There is an amazing #GF cafe in Teignmouth called 26. Felt like royalty. http://whatallergy.com/2012-12/teignmouth-with-allergies-twentysix-gluten-and-dairy-free-lunch

A food fad won’t kill you – an allergy will

There has been a predictable outcry in the allergy world this week’s in response to Rachel Johnson’s piece in Thursday’s Evening Standard on ‘dietary requirements’ and food fads. Being charitable, I am assuming that she has never suffered from or lived with someone with a food allergy. However, I do have some sympathy with her …

Bioplastics – a solution or part of the problem?

Everyday Plastic is a social enterprise group using accessible learning and publicity campaigns to reduce the amount of plastics used daily in our society. It was founded by its current director Daniel Webb who, having moved to Margate in Kent in 2016, was horrified to discover that there were no plastic recycling options on offer.  …

Do not extradite Julian Assange to the US

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity. Assange is facing a 175-year sentence for publishing …

What to believe – applying critical thought

For the average citizen evaluating the claims made for cure all – or even improve all – health products and procedures has always been difficult. Not only is it an area in which we have minimal expertise but most of us have a vested interest in finding a miracle intervention that will solve our health …

Could wireless monitoring devices be killing racehorses?

Regular readers may remember that back in August last year I alerted you to a posting on Arthur Firstenberg’s Cellphone Task Force site about phone masts and bird flu. Could there be a connection between the fact that the two wildlife sites in Holland and Northern France which had suffered catastrophic bird flu deaths were …
