As any regular reader of this blog will know – I am besotted with coconut oil. I spread it on my bread, I cook with it, I use it to clean my face – and of course, I use it to ward off Alzheimer’s disease.
(For those of you who do not know about the link between medium chain triglycderides [MCTs], ketones and Alzheimer’s, read Dr Mary Newport’s article about the improvement in her husband’s Alzheimer’s brought about by coconut oil, or check in to her site where she reports that several studies of MCTs for Alzheimer’s are now underway.)
Naturally, I also proselytize about coconut oil.
One of those who I have tried to convert is our good friend, nutritionist Truly-Gluten-Free Micki Rose. But although convinced of coconut oil’s virtues, Micki cannot be doing with its smell. So she has been on the trail of odour-less, or de-odourised, coconut oil which none the less retains all of its nutritional virtues. And she thinks that she has found it in the the Higher Nature coconut oil. Check in to her post here about what good people Higher Nature are and how they de-odourise their coconut oil.
For those of you who do not mind the coconutty smell, we use Lucy Bees, or Viridian, or Essence of Eden – all of which are delicious.
And while on the subject of smells… I now do not recall where I found a link to this wonderful story, but I felt I had to ‘share’…
Two Indonesian students have just won a gold medal at Indonesia’s Science Project Olympiad for the their environmentally-friendly, sweet smelling air freshener – made from cow dung!
They are now filing for a patent for their creation which, it seems, is not only environmentally virtuous but half the price of similar products! Read more here on Care2.
Hi,
Just wondering if you know why coconut oil can cause break-outs in some people?
Thanks,
Amanda.
HI Amanda – To be honest I haven’t a clue – beyond the facts that:
• There is nothing to which someone is not intolerant so it is possible that those people are just coconut intolerant.
• Coconut oil is quite rich so it may be that if you are not used to it, it may take a little time fro your digestion to accommodate itself.
However, the expert on all things coconut is Dr Bruce Fife at the Coconut Research Centre. He is very good at answering queries so I suggest you ask him or his colleagues.
Do let us know if he can throw some light.
